5-in-5 Reflections
Through this 5-in-5, I was able to solidify my ideas and approaches to the concept of loops and cycles.
I was able to recall my past experiences while doing these activities; which could be another form of cycling back in time. With the first project, I was able to revisit my experience in reading ‘Le Mythe de Sisyphe(The Myth of Sisyhpus)’, the original French version of the essay by Albert Camus while I was pursuing French for my major back in undergrad. I also read ‘L’Étranger(The Stranger)’, another piece by Camus, which I think formed a lot of my views on how I think about these loops and cycles, absurdness and meanings of life. For the ‘Doors’ project, I remembered the time I saw ‘Porte L’Enfer(The Gates of Hell)’ back in France at Musée Rodin. This was interesting since back at the time I was more drawn to ‘Le Penseur(The Thinker)’. I could only find a cropped photo of the gate from my gallery. I was able to notice a shift in my interest from back then to where I am now.
For the other projects, I was able to explore new mediums and technology. This was my first time trying to paint on a canvas. The physical interaction of painting was meaningful, and opened myself to new learnings. I noticed that after the repetition, the canvas got a lot heavier than when it was blank. Although the covered up canvas looks like it came back to its original state and meaningless, the weight it conveyed after the iterations did have multiple layers of meaning to it. I also never tried visualizing data with code before. I know there are improvements to make for ‘Life and Death of Korea’ since the connections were a little obvious, but I did enjoy the thinking process of trying to come up with the right data source and connecting it to a personal aspect. I think I’ll have to try more rigorously to find an unexpected or unanticipated connection from these data. ‘The Form of After Life’ is another project I would like to improve. The results of the thermal camera wasn’t as insightful as I had expected. I still think there is a connection between incense rituals and loops/cycles. It would be one of my goals to draw a visual element out of this concept.
As for the feedbacks from the presentation, I do want to try looking into loops and cycles that people tend to forget or overlook. It will be my next step to visualize as many different loops as possible to create a collection of digital artworks. I will be trying to keep a consistent aesthetic throughout this project.
